A frenzied surge at the main Eid-el-Fitr prayer ground in Gombe state resulted in two fatalities and left 20 people hospitalised.
In a statement, Buhari Abdullahi, Gombe police spokesperson,
said the incident occurred at the exit gate shortly after prayers.
Muslims across the country on Sunday celebrated Eid-el-Fitr,
marking the end of their month-long fast with prayers, feasting, and communal
gatherings.
“The stampede was caused by inadequate exit access, as a
large crowd, primarily women and children, rushed to leave the venue,”
Abdullahi said.
“The situation, worsened by intense heat, led to the
unfortunate incident, and 22 individuals were affected and were immediately
taken to hospitals for medical attention.
“Regrettably, two of the victims, a four-year-old boy, and
six months old baby girl, were pronounced dead by doctors while receiving
treatment.”
The command asked Eid ground managers to keep all gates open
for smooth movement, especially after prayers, to prevent overcrowding and
stampedes.
The police spokesperson also conveyed the command’s
condolences to the grieving families and wished the injured quick recovery.
Inuwa Yahaya, Gombe governor, in a statement via his aide,
condoled with the victims’ families and ordered a thorough investigation to
prevent a recurrence.
“The safety and well-being of our citizens remain a top
priority,” Yahaya said.
“The state government is committed to learning from this incident and implementing corrective measures.”
The governor added that the state government would cover all
medical expenses for the injured.
