President Bola Tinubu has directed ministers to resume a public performance review next week as part of efforts to promote transparency and keep Nigerians informed about government programmes.
Mohammed Idris, minister of information and national
orientation, announced the directive during a press briefing in Abuja on
Tuesday.
He said the review would begin at the national press centre,
with ministers providing updates on their activities and performance.
The minister added that last year, only 25 out of over 40
ministers attended the first edition of the review, where they gave an account
of their work and plans.
He assured that this year’s edition would be more
comprehensive, with all ministers expected to participate in the coming months.
“Recall last year, the ministry invited several ministers,
about 25 of them turned up last year to the national press center to give
account of what they have done or intended to do at that time so that the
nation gets to know the activities and programmes of the government,” he said.
“This year, we are kick starting another edition of the
ministerial press briefing that usually occurs at the national press center.
“The ministerial briefing as directed by Mr President is
commencing next week and the next couple of months, by the time the
administration is two years in office, we would have heard from all ministers
of government.
“When I say ministers, I mean ministorjws because some time
you have two ministerial and it’s not the two ministers that get to speak at
all times.
“This is important and is in line with the desire of
president Bola Tinubu to always inform Nigerians about what the government is
doing.”
In 2023, Hadiza Bala Usman, special adviser to the president
on policy coordination, said each minister would sign a performance bond with
Tinubu.
She said the bond will contain key performance indicators
(KPIs) that would be reviewed quarterly.
Before then, Usman had warned that ministers who do not
perform will be dropped.
