The Yobe State government has pardoned 30 inmates who were remanded in different correctional facilities for various offences.
Chief Information Officer, Ministry for Justice, Alhassan Sule Mamudo, confirmed this in Damaturu.
He said the pardon was granted based on the advice of the State’s Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy led by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Saleh Samanja.
According to him, the council had before the release of the inmates visited Potiskum, Nguru and Gashu’a correctional facilities to ascertain those who deserved to be pardoned.
Granting freedom to inmates with minor offences or option of fines is done in the state periodically as a way of decongesting the correctional facilities in the state, he noted.
