Residents of Agaza, Endo, and Agbagada communities in Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State have raised concerns over illegal mining activities threatening their peaceful existence.

Speaking to newsmen, the Osu of Agwada, HRH Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Obagu, said illegal miners began invading the communities following alleged unauthorised operations by two Chinese-owned companies.

The traditional ruler expressed deep concern over the unsafe mining practices, which have resulted in multiple fatalities.

“These companies commenced illegal mining operations in June 2024 without the community’s consent or authorisation. They are conducting these activities with the backing of unknown NSCDC officers,” he said.

A community member, Hauwa Haruna, recounted the heartbreaking loss of her only son, who died when a poorly dug mining pit collapsed.

“I was at home when they brought his body. They told me the pit caved in, and it was too dangerous for anyone to rescue him,” said the 60-year-old widow, now left without a provider.

Another resident, Danjuma Dokudu, lamented that his two sons also worked at the site, lured by meagre wages.

“They continue working there despite the risks because they have no alternative jobs,” he said.

Community youth leader Ode Eshimutu described the scale of the tragedy caused by the illegal miners, stating that deaths occur almost daily.

“Since the company arrived, over 50 people have died due to unsafe pits. The traditional ruler has repeatedly complained to the state government, but the illegal activities persist. We demand that the government ensures proper mining regulations are enforced and that illegal companies are sanctioned,” Eshimutu said.

He further called for licensed mining firms to collaborate with the community to ensure safety and economic benefits for residents.
