Remo Stars took a significant step toward their first-ever Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title with a commanding 2-0 victory over Enyimba in the week 31 fixture played yesterday at the Remo Stars Stadium.
The Ikenne-based side extended their unbeaten streak against the ‘Aba elephants’ to eight matches, further solidifying their position at the summit of the league table.
Olamilekan Adedayo opened the scoring in the 28th minute, netting his fifth league goal of the season, before Samson Olasupo sealed the win with a second goal in the 67th minute.
The victory leaves Remo Stars with 60 points from 30 games, needing just 14 points from their remaining eight matches to secure the historic title.
Elsewhere, El-Kanemi Warriors staged a spirited comeback to hold Shooting Stars to a 2-2 draw in Maiduguri. Shooting Stars initially took control with goals from Gideon Monday and Sadiq Ibrahim, but the Warriors fought back in the second half to salvage a point through Flying Eagles midfielder Alabi Sulaiman Jojo who scored his first-ever goal in the league.
His performance was widely applauded, as his late goal salvaged a crucial point for the Maiduguri-based side.
Speaking after the match, Alabi expressed his excitement about his milestone achievement.
“I am very happy to have scored an important goal for my team. It’s a dream come true,” he said.
The result keeps Shooting Stars in fourth place with 47 points, while El-Kanemi moved to 12th with 41 points.
In other fixtures, Plateau United stunned Rangers International with a 1-0 away win, courtesy of Suleimon Mojereola’s 73rd-minute strike. Meanwhile, Akwa United climbed out of the relegation zone with a crucial 2-0 triumph over Niger Tornadoes in Uyo.
The top three is now occupied by Remo Stars, Rivers United and Abia Warriors.
