A Pan-African Green Solutions Corporation, Greenplintch Africa says it will allocate N750m annually to the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos in an effort to support green project development.
The president, Dr. Olawale Akinwumi stated this during the opening ceremony of the 80m Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism (PACM)- Compalinat Clean Cookstoves Project Implementation Retreat with the theme: “Clean Cooking Access for Africa: Leaving No One Behind,” in Lagos.
He added that the distribution of the 80m clean cookstoves project will commence with the provision of cookstoves to 6m residents living in rural communities in Lagos by June.
“At the moment, we are working in 20 states but we will be starting from Lagos in June and also Niger and from there we go to another state. So, it is going to be done in phases for us to be able to achieve optimally.
“This project is rooted in Nigeria’s pioneering work under CDM2711, a UNFCCC-registered clean cookstove initiative that demonstrated improved cooking technology’s economic and climate benefits.
“Today, we scale up that legacy with an ambitious plan to provide free clean cookstoves to vulnerable households across Nigeria, ensuring lasting economic and social transformation,” he said.
The governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in his remarks, commended the initiative, saying that the distribution of the clean cookstoves will begin in Makoko.
The governor, represented by the state’s Head of Service, Bode Agoro, added that the beneficiaries will participate in the “pay-to-cook” initiative with a monthly stipend of N10,000 throughout the project’s duration.
“This project will address climate-induced socio-economic challenges by improving health outcomes and economic conditions for millions,” he said.
He expressed optimism over the economic potential of the project, saying it is capable of unlocking multi-billion-dollar green revenue streams and creating 35 million green jobs over its lifespan.
“The initiative also includes planting 300 million economic trees across Badagry, Epe, and Ikorodu creating 80,000 jobs and establishing a state-of-the-art clean cookstove manufacturing facility that will add 13,000 permanent jobs to our economy,” he said.
