The President of the International Trade Union Confederation, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, has enjoined young people working in the health sector to take up leadership positions and contribute their quota to national development.
He gave the advice Monday during the fourth national youth committee delegate conference, organised by the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN). It was themed ‘ Strengthening the gains of youths manifesting towards unions and national development.”
Wabba, who is also an ex-president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said there was a need to make the country better, adding that youths possess the talents, energy, capacity and need to take their space.
Citing examples of his early foray into unionism and achievements, he said, “God will not just give you free election. You have to fight for it and that’s why we fought the elections, and all those elections I won them by the grace of God. So, that is to tell you that the movement belongs to you, the youths.”
The President of the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria, Dr Kabiru Ado Sani said the union was glad to be part of history in building and mainstreaming young workers strongly in the affairs of the union, in line with global best practices and as advanced by the International Labour Organisation and the public service international amongst others . He enjoined all state councils to key into the vision of mainstreaming youth and women in union activities at all levels.
He said he was delighted about the conference because “Any organisation that undermines the importance of young workers undermines the future.”
He added that the future of the union and even its existence depended on the youths.
