Nigerian-born Moro Ojomo, a Super Bowl-winning defensive lineman for the Philadelphia Giants, has returned to his home country, bringing with him a message of national pride and ambition.
Welcomed by the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Ojomo reflected on his Nigerian heritage and its role in shaping his success on the world’s biggest football stage.
“It’s been amazing,” Ojomo said when asked how it feels to represent Nigeria at the highest level of American football.
“I have a drive and motivation that stems from my upbringing as a Nigerian. My passion for this country allows me to excel, and Nigeria has helped me excel at the biggest stage.”
Ojomo’s journey from Nigeria to the NFL Super Bowl is not just a personal victory but a testament to the resilience and talent of Nigerians worldwide.
He emphasized that American football presents a unique pathway for Nigerian youths, offering educational and professional opportunities.
“American football is everything. When you look at the number of Africans, specifically Nigerians, in the sport, it’s a lot,” he noted.
“The most important thing is giving our youths an opportunity to get into American football. It’s a pathway for education—high school and college degrees—and it’s a pathway to make Nigeria bigger on a worldly stage.”
Despite excelling in American football, Ojomo remains deeply connected to his Nigerian roots. His fondest memories of Nigeria revolve around community, friendships, and family values.
“The heritage, the hard work, the emphasis on education and sports—those are the things that shaped me,” he said.
Before committing to football, Ojomo dabbled in soccer and basketball but ultimately found his calling in the NFL, where he has made history.
Now, he hopes to inspire the next generation of Nigerians aiming for success abroad.
On his advice to those leaving the country in pursuit of their dreams, he said, “Just believe you can do anything,” adding, “Nigerians are great. Take advantage of opportunities and don’t let anyone deter you.”
