Over 10, 000 teachers across the state of Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa and few other states have benefitted from training conducted by Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE), a UK-funded education programme to strengthen state and non-state systems to improve learning outcomes.

The Deputy Team Lead of PLANE, Dr Samuel Achimugu who disclosed this at media interactions to mark the 2025 International Day of Education, in Abuja in Tuesday, said the UK government earmarked 60 million pound in Nigeria education through its project the selected states

He said the support would give searchlight to the challenges of education while proffering solutions to bring about good learning outcomes.

“We also have provided over 2,500 textbooks to primary one to primary four pupils in Hausa literacy and also numeracy. We’ve also used part of those funding to train over 10,000 teachers and tried to employ Nigerian youths to help the government to either train key staff in the schools, “ he said.

He added that part of the achievements of the programme include improving education delivery through policy improvement and capacity building of state and non-state education providers.

“The programme through its transforming learning approach has reached over 1 million learners and 10,000 teachers with foundational learning packages in the target states of Kaduna, Kano and Jigawa,” he said

While noting that there was a need for more inclusive, equitable, and innovative approaches to learning in Nigeria, he called on the media to be at the forefront in driving policy awareness, advocacy, and implementation.

Speaking, the Senior Education Advisor at the British High Commission, Ian Attfield said PLANE is a major UK investment, partnering with Nigeria to improve foundational reading and numeracy skills to address the learning crisis.

Attfield said a sufficient budget should be applied to education at all levels in Nigeria and proper funding so as to address the challenges and improve on its quality of education.

Attfield said that working together with the media, Nigeria and the UK could be held jointly accountable to ensure all girls and boys access quality, inclusive education.

Speaking on the theme of the International Day of Education- “AI and education: Preserving human agency in a world of automation”, Attfield highlighted the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence and technology in education.
