The Edo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has disclosed that it arrested 17,232 traffic offenders across the state.

The state FRSC Sector Commander, Cyril Mathew, disclosed this in Benin City while talking to City and Crime, explaining that the motorists, who were involved in traffic violations, were arrested across the state.

He said the offenders were arrested across the state between January and October this year.

He said 2,141 traffic offenders were arrested in January, 2,112 in February, 1,725 in March, 1,768 in April, 2,242 in May, 1,318 in June, 2,215 in July, 598 in August, 1020 in September and 1,598 in October.

Mathew said the offenders were arraigned in a mobile court and fined accordingly by the court for various offences.

He noted that the most common traffic violations in the state included the absence of fire extinguisher, failure to install speed limiting device, tyre violation, seat belt use violation,  overloading,  route violation, driving against traffic, and use of phone while driving  among others. 

He said the arrest of traffic offenders, arraignment in mobile court and fines would serve as deterrent to other drivers who are in the habit of road traffic violations. 

Mathew charged motorists and other road users in the state to adhere to traffic rules and regulations as well as maintain discipline on the road.

He noted that if motorists obey traffic rules and regulations and also maintain discipline on the road, the accident rate will drastically reduce in the country.
