Volkswagen Tiguan R Line platform and powertrain

India-spec powertrain yet to be confirmed

The new Tiguan is based on the MQB-Evo platform, and is available with a range of mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, petrol and diesel engine options internationally. In the UK, the range starts with a 150hp, 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine, then there’s a 204hp, 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid and also a 2.0-litre 265hp petrol and a 2.0-litre, 150hp diesel engine, the latter two also getting 4Motion all-wheel drive systems. All engines come mated to either a 6-speed or a 7-speed DCT transmission.

Volkswagen India hasn’t confirmed which of these will be brough to India, but the higher-spec 2.0-litre petrol engine can be expected in keeping with the premium billing of the SUV. For reference, the existing Tiguan in India is available with a 190hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with all-wheel drive and a 7-speed DCT.

The existing Tiguan is priced at Rs 38.17 lakh (ex-showroom, India), but expect a significant mark up in price for the next-generation SUV that’s arriving in a higher-spec.
