The Hyundai Ioniq 9 electric SUV has been showcased for the first time in India at the Auto Expo 2025 in New Delhi. The three-row born-electric SUV from Hyundai is brand’s flagship product for its born-EV line-up that includes models like the Ioniq 5 and the Ioniq 6.
The Ioniq 9 is based on the modular e-GMP skateboard platform that also sees duty on the Kia EV6, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and the Kia EV9. At 5,060mm, the Ioniq 9 is the largest electric SUV in Hyundai’s stable and is even 45mm longer than the EV9. Despite the size, the Ioniq 9 has a swoopy design, with a rounded front end and an upright tailgate. The LED headlights feature what Hyundai calls Parametric Pixels, which are also seen in the Ioniq 5, though in a slimmer avatar.
The Ioniq 9 also gets full combination tail-lights and 19-inch wheels as standard. The flared wheel arches on the side add some muscle to the SUV. Customers can opt from as many as 16 exterior choices and seven interior shade options.
The Ioniq 9 gets 6- and 7-seater layouts. The first two rows get massaging seats, and the second row can swivel and face the third row when the car's stationary. Besides a panoramic sunroof, features include a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen and 12-inch digital instrument cluster – together called the ‘panoramic curved display’, ambient lighting, roof-mounted air vents, multi-zone climate control, 100W USB-C ports in all three rows, and an 8-speaker sound system. Being a born-EV, it gets an open centre console area with plenty of smart storage spaces. There's also a neat band of controls for HVAC and other operation below the main screen, and the AC vents are nicely concealed in band stretching the width of the dashboard.
The Ioniq 9 comes with a 110.3 kWh battery pack that has a projected WLTP range of up to 620km. The Ioniq 9 is capable of charging from 10 percent to 80 percent in 24 minutes with a 350kW charger. It has 400V and 800V charging capabilities and also comes with a vehicle-to-load (V2L) feature that allows one to use the SUV to charge other electrical items.
There are two variants: Long Range (LR) and Performance. The Ioniq 9 LR gets a rear-wheel drive configuration with 218hp and 350Nm. The LR AWD adds a 95hp, 255Nm motor at the front. The top-of-the-line Ioniq 9 Performance gets the 218hp motor on the both front and the rear axles. In its most powerful avatar, the Ioniq 9 sprint from 0-100kph in a claimed 5.2 seconds and has a top-speed of 200kph. The Ioniq 9 also gets dynamic torque vectoring, lateral wind stability control along with a rough-road package called Terrain Traction Control. It features an Auto Terrain Mode that is said to use AI to gauge the road surface.
The Ioniq 9 is being shown to the Indian audience just as a halo model. While Kia already has the EV9 on sale in India, we are told there are no talks of the Ioniq 9 going on sale in India anytime soon.
Apart from the Ioniq 9, Hyundai has the Creta electric on display that was launched at Rs 17.99 lakh recently. The Korean brand also has the Hyundai Staria MPV and the Creta 1.0 turbo petrol at the show.
