Kia Syros India launch details

Adding to its current compact SUV lineup, Kia is all set to globally debut the Syros in India later this week. The Syros (codename: AY) will have a more premium positioning than the Sonet, which has a similar under-4-metre footprint, and will come with new features. Prices are expected to be announced in January when it will be showcased at Delhi’s Bharat Mobility Expo.

  1. Kia Syros will have more rear seat space and features than Sonet
  2. Deliveries are expected to begin by late January
  3. Syros to also get an EV variant at a later stage

Kia Syros exterior design

Visually, the most distinctive element about the Syros is its tallboy, boxy design that’s intended to open up more interior room. It gets a clamshell bonnet that houses a 2D Kia logo, under which sit vertically stacked LED headlights and DRLs. There’s a prominent use of black cladding across over the wheel arches and bumpers, and the alloy wheel design is also new, and could measure up to 17-inches on top variants. Also, teasers so far reveal a body-coloured B-pillar and a sharp and distinctive kink towards the rear quarter glass that’s reminiscent of the erstwhile Skoda Yeti. It also gets flush-fitting door handles, and L-shaped high-mounted tail lights at the rear.

Kia Syros interior and features

Inside, Kia says, the Syros will offer a “lounge-like” experience, with “futuristic features and an innovative seating layout”. Kia also stated that the rear seat space will surpass not only what's offered in the Sonet but also the 4.3-metre Seltos. Further, it will include reclining rear seats, a feature currently exclusive to the Hyundai Venue in this segment.

The infotainment system is expected to be a 10.25-inch unit in top trims, and it will also likely have a full-digital instrument cluster. Teaser images have also previewed a new tow-spoke steering wheel with buttons to control the infotainment system and terrain modes (Mud, Snow/Wet and Sand), front parking sensors, a 360-degree camera setup, wireless charger, USB-C ports, panoramic sunroof and an ADAS suite as well.

Kia Syros: engines, expected price

The Syros will be powered by the familiar 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and the 1.5-litre diesel engines with their respective manual and automatic gearboxes. For reference, the former is tune for 120hp and 172Nm, while the latter produces 116hp and 250Nm in the Sonet. However, the naturally aspirated 1.2-litre petrol mill offered in entry-level Sonet variants is out of the Syros’ engine family. This will be in keeping with the more premium positioning of Syros.

Being slotted above the Sonet, whose turbo-petrol ranges from Rs 9.63 lakh to Rs 14.91 lakh (ex-showroom), we expect the Syros to debut at nearly Rs 10 lakh and max out at over Rs 15 lakh. That may also cause some overlapping with some variants of the Seltos.
