The contribution of CNG-powered vehicles to Hyundai Motor India’s overall sales hit a record 14.9 percent in October on the back of strong demand in that segment and the company’s strong portfolio of entry-level CNG models.
The company recently introduced its dual CNG cylinder setup in the Grand i10 Nios and Exter, following which both models recorded incremental sales numbers as it offered better boot space and higher fuel efficiency.
“We continuously listen to our customers’ feedback. The introduction of Hy-CNG Duo is aimed at meeting customer demands of providing ample space with high mileage and safety. This has helped us achieve the highest-ever CNG penetration of 14.9 percent in October 2024,” said Hyundai India’s chief operating officer Tarun Garg.
Apart from the Grand i10 and Exter, Hyundai also offers the Aura with a CNG powertrain. The share of CNG models in Hyundai’s sales volumes in the first seven months (April-October) of the current financial year stands at 12.8 percent. Pune, New Delhi and Ahmedabad are the top three cities where Hyundai witnessed strong demand for CNG models.
During the financial year that ended in March 2024, CNG vehicles comprised 11.4 percent of Hyundai’s overall sales. In rural markets, their share has improved rapidly over the years to 12 percent, and in urban markets, it is at 10.7 percent.
In October, CNG made up 17.4 percent of Grand i10 Nios’ sales; the number was 39.7 percent for Exter and 90.6 percent for Aura. Garg noted that going forward, the increase in CNG stations across the country will further boost the sales of CNG models. “At present, India already has more than 7,000 CNG stations, and the aim is to have approximately 17,500 CNG stations by 2030, which will further fuel the CNG demand.”
Maruti Suzuki is the largest player in the CNG segment, with around 72 percent market share. With around 12 CNG offerings in its portfolio, CNG models account for approximately 28 percent of its sales. Maruti has set a target of selling 6 lakh CNG models this year. For Tata Motors, CNG models accounted for 21 percent of sales volume during the first half of the current financial year, up from 16 percent in the year-ago period.
