Bengaluru: Renowned Kannada actor and stage director Sarigama Viji (76) passed away on Wednesday, January 15. He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bengaluru following a decline in his health.
Arrangements have been made for the public to pay their respects at his residence in Mahalakshmi Layout. His final rites will take place on Thursday, January 16, at the crematorium near T R Mill in Chamarajpet.
A Glorious Career in Cinema and Theatre
Sarigama Viji made his acting debut in 1980 with a small role in the film Beluvalada Madilalli, directed by Geethapriya. Over his illustrious career, he acted in nearly 269 films, often alongside Tiger Prabhakar.
Beyond acting, Viji worked as an assistant director in about 80 films and directed over 2,400 episodes for Kannada television serials. His contributions earned him widespread recognition and admiration.
The actor earned his iconic nickname “Sarigama Viji” from his play Samsaradalli Sarigama, which saw more than 1,300 performances across Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. His talent for comedy roles endeared him to audiences, both on stage and in films.
Legacy in Theatre
Viji was also a prominent figure in theatre. His play Samsaradalli Sarigama was performed over 1,390 times, cementing his reputation as a stalwart of the Kannada stage.
In cinema, his final appearance was in the film Dakota Picture. Sarigama Viji leaves behind a legacy of creativity and dedication that will continue to inspire generations.
