Chamarajanagar: A two-year-old female leopard was captured in a trap set by the forest department near Parvathibetta’s Ontigudda in the buffer zone of Bandipur Tiger Reserve, Gundlupet taluk, on Wednesday morning (Jan 23).
The forest department officials had placed a cage in the farmland of Prakash. Farmers discovered the trapped leopard while visiting the field in the morning and promptly informed forest officials.
A team led by Gundlupet Buffer Zone DRFO Shivakumar inspected the site and later relocated the leopard along with the cage to a remote area within the Mulehole Wildlife Sanctuary.
Relief for farmers
The region around Parvathibetta has frequently witnessed leopard sightings, with the animals attacking and killing livestock. This persistent threat had caused considerable fear among farmers. Acting on their request, forest officials installed the trap 15 days ago, successfully capturing the leopard. The incident has brought significant relief to the local farming community.
