Mangaluru: In a stark contrast to the promise of a “Smart Mangaluru,” residents near Derebail are facing severe hardships as overflowing drainage water has inundated several homes and compounds, creating an unhygienic environment over the past few days.
The issue has surfaced on Malemar Road in Konchady, leaving several residents troubled. For days, drainage water has been flowing uncontrollably, collecting in the yards of some houses and causing distress.
Speaking to Udayavani’s Sudina, a local resident, Geetha Shetty, said, “This problem started about five days ago. Drainage water has been seeping into the compounds and even inside some homes, creating a filthy atmosphere. Earlier, rainwater used to cause flooding here; now, it’s sewage water.”
She further expressed concerns about health risks due to the stagnant drainage water and noted that complaints to the local authorities have yet to yield any results.
Local Councillor Responds
Local corporator Ranjini Kotian told Sudina, “The main drainage pipe has been blocked, and efforts are underway to clear it. Technical challenges in pumping out the water are causing delays, but we are trying our best to resolve the issue.”
Well Water Contaminated
Reports of drainage problems are widespread in Mangaluru, with complaints of sewage entering wells. A similar incident has occurred in Derebail, where overflowing drainage water has contaminated wells in some households. Residents have complained that the water from these wells is now unfit for drinking, adding to their woes.
