Belman: The Sabarimala pilgrimage season is in full swing, with lakhs of Hindu devotees visiting Lord Ayyappa’s temple. Among them is Ajith Serrao, a young Christian man from Gokulanagar in Sankalakariya, Karkala taluk, who is set to embark on his 18th pilgrimage.

Ajith, the son of William and Dulcine Serrao, is one of their twin sons and is an electrical engineer.

Eighteen years ago, Ajith had donned the sacred “mala” for the first time after being inspired by a Guru Swami from Polali. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, Ajith didn’t miss the opportunity to visit Lord Ayyappa. Over the past 17 years, he has traversed the dense forest route to Sabarimala five times. The only year he abstained was when his father passed away.

Ajith’s family, and neighbors, including people of all faiths, support him in this pious work. “My faith in Lord Ayyappa is unwavering. Wearing the mala has helped me lead a disciplined, addiction-free life,” Ajith says. This year, he looks forward to witnessing the divine Makara Jyothi and receiving Lord Ayyappa’s blessings.
