Burhanpur (Madhya Pradesh): A ‘religiously sensitive’ post on social media sparked tension in Madhya Pradesh’s Burhanpur on Tuesday night.

Demonstrating against the post, a large number of people gathered at the Kotwali police station demanding immediate action against the accused.

According to information, a young man from Loharmandi was chatting on Instagram with another local youth, at around 10 pm on March 18. During the conversation, he made a religious comment, which led to a dispute.

Protest erupted after police complaint

The offended youth filed a police complaint. As the police took action, members of a particular community learned about the incident and gathered in protest. The police then stepped in to control the crowd.

As soon as officials received the information, SP Devendra Patidar, Collector Harsh Singh, and ADM Veer Singh Chauhan reached the scene with police forces. They urged people to remain calm and successfully controlled the situation.

Markets temporarily closed

For security reasons, markets were temporarily closed. The police acted quickly, arresting the accused and filing a case against him.

According to SP Patidar, orders under Section 188 were already in place regarding social media posts. He warned that strict action would be taken against anyone attempting to take the law into their own hands. He urged people to report any objectionable content to the police instead of resorting to protests.

Police and district officials also conducted a city patrol, appealing people not to post objectionable content on social media.

After the arrest, police also conducted a flag march to maintain peace in the city.
