Chennai: The city that woke up at 06:19 AM is set to experience heavy rainfall on Tuesday, March 11, 2025. The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert in the city and an orange alert has been issued in several other parts of Tamil Nadu.

These changes in weather conditions are due to the cyclonic circulation over the sea. Overcast skies are predicted in the city, which is likely to remain the same throughout the day. The minimum and maximum temperatures are likely to be around 27 degrees Celsius and 30 degrees Celsius, respectively.

According to the IMD, moderate to heavy rain is anticipated in the city and it will be accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. The humidity is expected to be around 82 per cent, and the wind is expected to blow steadily from the North at 23 km/h. The Sun is expected to set at 6:19 PM. The weather department also predicted rainfall in other districts, including Virudhunagar, Mayiladuthurai, Sivaganga, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram and Tiruvaru.

Cyclonic circulation intensifies in the Bay of Bengal

The adverse weather in the state has been linked to a cyclonic circulation over the Equatorial Indian Ocean and the southwest Bay of Bengal. The districts of Kanniyakumari, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Thoothukudi are predicted to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, whereas the districts of Sivaganga, Pudukottai, Tiruvarur, and Ramanathapuram, are also anticipated to receive moderate to heavy rainfall.
