Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Highlighting the evolving nature of modern warfare and drawing parallels with the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi said here on Monday that wars were no longer fought solely by the armed forces but by entire nations.
“The Russia-Ukraine war has demonstrated that every citizen plays his part, with Ukraine witnessing its citizens fight the war as responsible soldiers,” he said during a function in a private college. He added that every citizen was a warrior in ensuring the nation’s security with each person playing a vital role, whether as a soldier, a space cyber or information warrior.
Gen Dwivedi’s speech focused on the crucial intersection of education, leadership and national security with a special emphasis on India’s vision for 2047. “Education not only prepares you to embark on a career but lays down a foundation for personal growth, leadership growth and progressive contribution to society. So, in India, education has always been viewed as a lifelong process of self-discovery, growth and service to society,” he said.
He noted that India’s aspirations for 2047 symbolized by the goal of a “Developed India,” hinged on the collective efforts of its citizens, especially the youth. He spoke about the nation’s vision, urging students to embrace critical thinking, creativity and imagination. “Never lose sight of your creativity and imagination,” he advised, stressing the importance of these qualities in problem-solving and innovation. He also stated that the Indian Army’s ongoing transformation towards a ‘modern, agile and technology-enabled force” was aligned with India’s national goals for 2047.
Surakshit & Saksham Bharat
Gen Dwivedi said that the army was committed to ensuring a ‘Surakshit and Saksham Bharat’ with a balanced approach to both security and societal welfare. He revealed the army’s strategic vision for the coming decades: a ‘Decade of Transformation’ (up to 2032), followed by a ‘Period of Consolidation’ (2037), and a ‘Decade of Excellence’.
“This roadmap would guide the army’s modernization and enhance its ability to protect India’s interests, both domestically and internationally,” he said. Beyond military transformation, Gen Dwivedi spoke of the army’s educational and social initiatives, such as its schools for underprivileged and specially-abled children.
