After India won the final match of the Champions Trophy on Sunday, cricket fans flooded the streets across Nashik to celebrate. Firecrackers burst in the College Road area, which caused a fire near the college. When the fire brigade vehicle was on its way to extinguish the flames, it was blocked by the crowd of cricket fans on College Road. At that moment, some hooligans climbed onto the fire vehicle and began causing a ruckus.
After India’s Champions Cup victory, the city's excitement was palpable, with people celebrating on the streets. Fireworks were set off, and some people even sang songs, causing traffic jams in various areas. The College Road square was congested, making it difficult for pedestrians to move. As youth danced to the music, fireworks set off nearby, causing burning crackers to fall in an open field adjacent to the college. The dried grass caught fire, prompting locals to alert the fire department.
When the fire truck arrived, it was unable to proceed due to the crowd on College Road. Some individuals climbed onto the vehicle, dancing and obstructing the firefighters' efforts. Police present at the scene did not intervene, allowing the situation to escalate. It wasn’t until the people were removed from the vehicle that the fire truck was able to continue to the scene. The delay allowed the fire to spread further. Thankfully, the fire department contained the blaze within minutes, but it caused damage to the field and trees in the area.
Cops said this
Jagwinder Singh Rajput (Inspector, Gangapur Road Police Station) commented that despite the chaos, no complaint was filed with the fire department, so no action could be taken. KP Patil (Fire Officer) added that the large-scale firework display after India’s victory caused the fire, and the delay in the fire engine's arrival was due to the crowd. The police presence was insufficient to manage the situation.
