In a remarkable initiative that blends women's empowerment with efficiency in public service, Matunga Station on Central Railway has set a historic milestone as the first-ever fully women-staffed station in the country. This pioneering effort by Central Railway was launched in July 2017. In recognition of this groundbreaking achievement, Matunga Station earned a spot in the Limca Book of Records 2018 as a fully managed station by women

Matunga's transformation into an all-women station is an exemplary model of empowerment and inclusion. A team of 32 women staff members, including 16 booking clerks, 9 ticket checkers, 6 operating staff, RPF (Railway Protection Force) personnel, pointsmen and safai karmacharis, now manage every aspect of the station's operation. This includes crucial responsibilities such as handling ticketing, ensuring safety, managing operations, and maintaining the station etc. The initiative not only empowers women but also fosters an environment where they have the autonomy to make decisions, enhancing their personal and professional well-being while contributing to the station's smooth functioning.

The team works under the leadership of Mrs. Sarika Sawant, the station manager, who has been a trailblazer herself. Sawant has demonstrated exemplary dedication and leadership in managing the station, ensuring efficiency and operational excellence.

Smt. Manali Patil is the Chief Ticket Inspector, and her team of lady ticket-checking staff ensures that all passengers at the station abide by rules and regulations. Their diligent efforts contribute significantly to maintaining discipline and order, reinforcing the commitment to providing a safe and smooth travel experience for commuters.

Since the all-women team took charge, the station’s operations have been running smoothly, yielding positive and encouraging results. The women staff have embraced their responsibilities with efficiency, proving that with the right support and empowerment, women can excel in all sectors, including traditionally male-dominated fields like railway operations.

This initiative is not just about employment; it represents a broader vision of creating an environment that encourages women to be leaders, make decisions, and manage operations effectively while ensuring the well-being of the organization. It serves as a beacon of inspiration for other institutions and organizations, demonstrating the significant role women can play in public service and infrastructure management.

The success of Matunga Station is a proud achievement for Central Railway and stands as a shining example of how women's leadership can shape the future of public transportation in India.
