Ottawa: Canada's Liberal Party on Sunday elected a financial expert, Mark Carney, as Justin Trudeau's successor as the 24th Prime Minister of the country. Carney received a landslide victory on Sunday in the bid to succeed Trudeau. Carney will hold the office till the elections due later this year. The 59-year-old is former Goldman Sachs banker.
After getting elected, Carney challenged US President Donald Trump amid the tariff war. He said, "We didn't ask for this fight, but Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves." He has served as the governor of both the British and Canadian central banks.
In a strong message to Trump, Carney stated, "America is not Canada. And Canada never, ever, will be part of America in any way, shape or form." Notably, Trump after getting elected had said that he would make Canada the 51st state of the US.
Who Is Carney?
Mark Joseph Carney as born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, and raised in Alberta's Edmonton. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics from Harvard University in 1988. He studied at Oxford University, where he pursued a master's degree in 1993 and a doctoral degree in 1995.
Carney Joined the Bank of Canada as a deputy governor in 2003. In 2004, he was named as senior associate deputy minister for the Department of Finance Canada. In 2007, Carney was named Governor of the Bank of Canada. He was responsible for Canadian monetary policy during the global financial crisis. He served at the post untill 2013, when was appointed as the Governor of the Bank of England. He led the British central bank's response to Brexit and the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He also served as chair and head of impact investing at Brookfield Asset Management and as chair of the board of directors for Bloomberg L.P. He was also appointed the United Nations Special Envoy for climate action and finance. Carney also worked as an adviser to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during the COVID-19 pandemic and was made chair of the Liberal Party's economic growth taskforce.
Carney had played ice hockey at Harvard and served as a backup goalie. And at Oxford, he was co-captain of the university's Ice Hockey Club.
Carney supports retaliatory tariffs against the US. he said, "My government will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect".
Notably, Trudeau has led the Liberal Party for 13 years and served as prime minister for nearly 10 years.
