After a bad start, with losses over half a percent, the Indian indices bounced back to narrow their losses. While the markets did end yet another session in red, the amount or the magnitude of the decline was edged out.
This session comes to pass after news arrived that the US President Donald Trump-led administration will impose the long-awaited tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico.
Day's Recap
This development resulted in a major decline in US markets, across the board.
After a sharp fall at the beginning, the BSE Sensex closed the day at 72,989.93, down by 96.01 points or 0.13 per cent. At the NSE, the Nifty index closed for the day at 22,082.65, down by 36.65 points or 0.17 per cent.
Also, Nifty Bank closed for the day with major losses amounting to 130.90 points or 0.27 per cent, closing at 48,245.20.
Major Gainers and Losers
Gainers: On the BSE tranche, at the time of writing, major gainers included SBI, Zomato, HDFC Bank, Tata Steel and Powergrid.
Losers: The losers were in abundance, as the stocks slumped on Tuesday. Stocks that suffered on the day included Bajaj Finserv, HCL, Nestle and Asian Paints.
Markets On Tuesday Morning
The markets opened on Tuesday with deep cuts. The BSE Sensex started the day at 72,817.34 points, lower than the previous day's 73,085.94. The Nifty 50 index started the day at 21,974.45, lower than the previous day's closing of 22,119.30.
In addition, the Nifty Bank index also started the day trading low at 47,942.50, behind Monday's 48,114.30.
Asian Markets
The Asian indices had an underwhelming day, as major indices closed in red on Tuesday. In Japan, the Nikkei nose dived 1.20 per cent or 454.29 points, crumbling below the 37k mark, closing at 37,331.18.
Another Tokyo-based index, TOPIX, closed at 2,710.18, declining by 0.71 per cent or 19.38 points.
The story changes a little as we move to China, the Hang Seng also closed with minor losses in its numbers, closing with a decline of 0.28 per cent or 64.50 points, at 22,941.77.
Shanghai-based SSE Composite also ended the day's trade in the green. The index gained 0.22 per cent or 7.28 points of its value and closed at 3,324.21. South Korea's KOSPI also closed in red with small losses of 0.15 per cent or 3.86 points, rising to 2,528.92.
