Indore (Madhya Pradesh): A groundbreaking research project at Indore Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, led by Dr Mukesh Saxena, has unveiled the medicinal benefits of Kusum flowers (Safflower) in preventing heart attacks and improving overall health.
These flowers contain Hydroxy Safflor Yellow-A, a powerful compound that helps in blood thinning, reducing the risk of clot formation and heart-related ailments.
Additionally, they are rich in Vitamin B1, B2 and B12, essential for maintaining energy levels and overall physical well-being. To ensure the highest quality, farmers are trained to select only the most potent flowers.
The selection process includes choosing only deep orange flowers, as they have the highest medicinal properties. Light orange or pale yellow flowers are avoided.
Wilted, faded, or damaged flowers are not collected, as they lose their potency. Farmers manually pluck flowers to prevent damage and ensure purity. After harvesting, the flowers are dried under controlled conditions to preserve their medicinal benefits.
Dr Saxena highlighted that Kusum flower cultivation is not only beneficial for health but also for farmers. With prices ranging between Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 per hectare for dried flowers, this initiative offers a significant income boost.
The research team is now preparing for clinical trials and patent registration. Once approved, Kusum water will be launched as a commercial product, offering a natural, health-boosting alternative to consumers while encouraging sustainable farming practices.
