Indore (Madhya Pradesh): If you are commuting on AB Road, maintain a steady speed (an average of 30-40km/hr) and you will probably catch green signals all the way through a series of intersections.
As part of the Indore Smart City Project, the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has implemented an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS)- ‘Green Corridor’ on AB Road to ensure smooth and uninterrupted traffic flow.
This initiative aims to reduce congestion, save fuel and minimize pollution, making Indore a smarter and more organized city in terms of traffic management. The newly developed Green Corridor spans from Scheme No 78 Square to Navlakha Square.
These squares have been integrated with advanced ITMS, enabling a seamless traffic flow by synchronizing signals. Smart City CEO Divyank Singh said that the ITMS system synchronized traffic signals, allowing vehicles that maintained a specific speed to pass through multiple squares without encountering a red light.
“The data of the distance between the squares and time taken for a vehicle to cover the distance between the respective signals has been analysed. Based on this data, the signals are synchronised in such a way that any person driving at a speed of 35-40 kmph will catch all green signals,” he added.
This technology is based on artificial intelligence and the cameras installed on squares are compatible enough to count the number of vehicles at the square and measure the time in respect of the speed for the signal to go green from red.
This technology majorly ensures a continuous flow of traffic, reducing stop-and-go movements, which often contribute to fuel wastage and pollution. By optimizing the traffic system, the Green Corridor is expected to make daily commutes faster, safer and more efficient for residents.
Key Benefits of the Green Corridor
Synchronized traffic lights: Traffic signals at all major intersections are synchronized, significantly reducing congestion and wait times.
Uninterrupted travel: Vehicles can move smoothly through the corridor without frequent stops, ensuring faster commutes. ? Fuel and time efficiency: Reduced stoppages mean lower fuel consumption and travel time, directly benefiting daily commuters.
Environmental impact: The initiative contributes to lower carbon emissions and improved air quality by cutting down vehicle idling time.
Better traffic discipline:
The system encourages uniform vehicle speeds, reducing instances of sudden braking and traffic blockages.
A step towards a smarter Indore
“The teams from Indore Municipal Corporation and Smart City Project have worked diligently to implement this initiative, keeping in mind the growing traffic demands of the city. With an increasing number of vehicles on the roads, efficient traffic management has become crucial to prevent congestion and maintain urban mobility. The Green Corridor is a significant step towards making Indore a smart, sustainable and well-organized city.”
