Indore (Madhya Pradesh): The Khajrana Temple, one of the oldest and most revered landmarks in the region, has a rich history that spans 1700 years. Originally covering an area of 25,000 square feet, the temple has recently undergone significant expansion, now encompassing an impressive 3.5 lakh square feet.

This expansion has enabled the temple to better accommodate the growing number of devotees and to continue its extensive charitable and spiritual services.

A heritage run by Bhatt Family

The temple has been under the management of the Bhatt Family for generations. Their leadership has ensured that the temple not only serves as a spiritual sanctuary but also plays an active role in community welfare. While the temple is primarily run by the Bhatt Family, the administration, particularly under the guidance of collector Manoj Shrivastava since 2003, plays a crucial role in determining the salaries of the temple staff and overseeing the operations.

Vibrant marketplace and reasonable pricing

The area surrounding the temple is bustling with 60 shops, each offering a range of goods catering to the needs of the devotees. Of these, one shop is run by the temple committee, providing items at reasonable prices, making it a favourite stop for those visiting the temple. This shop ensures that even those with limited resources can make offerings and purchase devotional items.

Robust security and safety measures

Given the temple’s vast size and the large number of visitors it attracts, security is a top priority. During major festivities, the temple employs 54 security guards to manage the crowd, ensuring safety and smooth operations. On regular days, 35 security guards maintain peace within the temple and its grounds.

Annakshetra: Feeding the needy

A core feature of the temple is the Annakshetra, a food distribution programme that has been running for over 40 years. Every day, 2,000 people are fed through this programme, which is supported by lifetime members and other contributors who provide generous donations. The temple’s commitment to helping the less fortunate extends beyond its premises: * Annakshetra sends food for 1,200 people at MY Hospital * Additionally, meals are provided for 2,400 people across 7 hospitals, including MGM Medical College, with carefully planned diet meals to ensure the nutritional needs of the recipients are met

Medical services: A beacon of compassion

The temple has also taken steps to improve health services in the community. In 2013, it began offering free dialysis to those in need, alleviating the financial burden on many who require this life-saving treatment. This initiative continues to be a vital service for the local community.

Record-breaking donations

The temple has seen significant financial contributions over the years. The largest donation came in 2024, when the temple received a generous 1.5 crore donation, marking the highest donation in its history. These donations have been crucial in sustaining the temple’s charitable activities and expanding its facilities.

Expanding facilities: A hub for community events

In line with its growth, the temple recently constructed a new hall with a capacity of 1,000 people. This hall also features 21 rooms, which are available for school cultural events and other community functions. The temple continues to be a place where spiritual and cultural activities intersect, offering a space for people to gather, celebrate, and learn.

Security and modernisation

To ensure the safety of its visitors, the temple has installed cameras throughout the premises. These security measures are in place to handle the large crowds, especially during significant events. On January 1st, the temple attracts its largest crowd, with an estimated 3 lakh people visiting on this special day.

The vision for the future: Smart city development

A proposal to utilise empty land near the temple and to be developed under smart city is underway.
