Uttarakhand: Around 57 Border Roads Organization (BRO) workers were stranded in Badrinath, Uttarakhand, following an avalanche caused by a glacier burst. Several workers were buried under the snow, and rescue operations are currently underway.

According to the news agency ANI, 32 workers have been rescued so far while, 25 still remain trapped. The incident occurred along the national highway linking Mana to Ghastoli.

Badrinath Avalanche

On the morning of February 28, an avalanche hit a BRO labour camp between Mana and Badrinath, trapping 57 workers inside containers and a shed. Over 100 personnel from the Army’s Ibex Brigade, including doctors and rescue teams, were deployed. By 11:50 am, five containers were located, and 10 workers were rescued, four of whom are in critical condition.

IG Nilesh Anand Bharne told ANI that a large avalanche hit the BRO camp near Mana, trapping 57 workers involved in road construction. He added, "10 workers have been rescued and sent to the army camp near Mana in critical condition."

'Rescue Efforts Hampered by Weather'

Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari said an avalanche struck between Mana and Mana Pass, where about 57 BRO workers were stationed. While no casualties have been reported so far, rescue teams from the Army, police, ITBP, and BRO have been deployed. He added that heavy rainfall is slowing down the rescue process, but efforts will be intensified once weather conditions improve.

Uttarakhand CM Reviews Rescue Operations

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami held a meeting with senior officials at the State Disaster Control Room to assess the ongoing rescue efforts for 47 workers still trapped in Chamoli following the avalanche near Mana.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Assures Support

Speaking about the avalanche in Mana, Joshimath, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also assured support for the trapped BRO workers and said, "Spoke to CM Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami regarding the situation. The administration is providing all possible assistance to the affected Rescue efforts by local Army units are also underway. All efforts to rescue the trapped personnel are being undertaken by utilising all available resources."

Home Minister Amit Shah Reviews Situation

Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to CM Dhami on Friday to assess the situation after the avalanche. He emphasised that the government's top priority is to safely rescue all those still trapped.

Rescue Efforts Continue in Chamoli

Amid ongoing snowfall, rescue operations are in progress in Chamoli’s border region, where 41 BRO workers remain trapped after the avalanche. Four NDRF teams have been dispatched to assist in the rescue.

NDRF Focused on Saving Lives

NDRF DG Piyush Anand said 16 people have been rescued so far, with four NDRF teams deployed for the Chamoli avalanche operation. He added that Home Minister Amit Shah is closely monitoring the situation, having spoken to both him and the Uttarakhand CM, and has "given clear directions to save every life."

'32 Workers Rescued, 25 Still Trapped'

Speaking about the Chamoli Avalanche, Uttarakhand Disaster Management Department said, "By 5:00 pm, 32 people had been rescued safely. The process of evacuating the remaining 25 people is in progress. Relief and rescue work is going on on a war footing to rescue people trapped in the avalanche 6 km ahead of Badrinath Dham in Chamoli district."
