Palghar, Maharashtra: A chilling tale of betrayal and murder has been uncovered by the Crime Branch Unit 3 of the Mira-Bhayandar Vasai-Virar Police (MBVV) Commissionerate, who successfully solved a two-month-old murder case of a woman from Uttar Pradesh within 24 hours. Amit Sugriv Singh, 28, has been arrested for the murder of his girlfriend, Priya Shambhunath Singh, 25.

The case began when Priya Singh was reported missing from her hometown in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, on December 27, 2024. A missing person's report was filed at Ames Police Station, Gorakhpur on December 29.

The search for the missing woman took a significant turn when the Uttar Pradesh police team met with Avinash Ambure, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Crime, on February 25, 2025. Ambure and his team took serious cognizance of the matter and instructed the Police Inspector, Crime Branch Unit 3, to search for the missing woman.

Investigations revealed that Priya Singh frequently visited Amit Singh, residing in Vasai West. She had last visited him on December 16. Further inquiries led the police to bring Amit Singh in for questioning. Initially evasive, Amit Singh eventually confessed to murdering Priya Singh on December 25.

According to his confession, Amit Singh and Priya Singh were in a relationship, but his family opposed their marriage. Facing pressure from Priya to marry, Amit Singh took her to an isolated area near Royal Park Industry in Poman, Mahajan Pada, under the pretense of going for a drive. At around 11:00 PM, he strangled her to death and disposed of her body in a nearby drain.

To create the illusion that Priya Singh had returned to Delhi and to mislead investigators, Amit Singh placed her active mobile phone on the Rajdhani Express train.

The accused has been charged with murder and destruction of evidence under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Naigaon Police Station. He is now in custody, and the investigation is being led by Senior Police Inspector Vijay Kadam of Naigaon Police Station.
