Indore (Madhya Pradesh): A computer engineer from a Mumbai-based company was duped of Rs 84,000 by an online scammer in the Aerodrome area, police said on Wednesday.
He had to book some rooms in a resort in Nashik and had searched for the same on the internet. The conman, who posed himself as an official of the said resort, took money on the pretext of booking the rooms.
Additional DCP (zone-1) Aalok Sharma told Free Press that Rahul Ajmera, a resident of Mahaveerbagh area of the city has lodged a complaint that he is a computer engineer in Mumbai and came to the city for a few days.
On February 23, he had searched for a resort in Nashik. He searched the resort and found a contact number on the internet.
When he made a phone call, the receiver informed him that he was an official from the resort. Later, he sent some photos of the resort and the rooms. Ajmera had earlier visited the resort so he found the room photo actually and he paid Rs 84,000 to a bank account number given by the scammer.
When he didn’t receive the booking details, he contacted the resort's official number. He was informed that they didn’t receive the amount and the website using the name of their resort was forged.
Later, Ajmera approached the Aerodrome police station and lodged a complaint with the cyber helpdesk of zone-1 there. Sharma further said that the complainant transferred money in three installments to book 7 rooms.
The account number and the IFSC given by the conman also belonged to Nashik so he trusted the conman and transferred the money. The police believed that the online scammers were from Maharashtra. Further investigation is on to gather more information about them.
