Mahashivratri, celebrating Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati’s divine union, is deeply rooted in history and devotion. In Madhya Pradesh, grand rituals at Jyotirlingas like Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar, night-long bhajans, fairs, and deep daan create a vibrant spiritual atmosphere.
The rituals begin a day earlier with devotees performing Lord Shiva’s haldi ceremony, applying turmeric paste on the Shivalinga before bathing it in milk.
On the day of Mahashivratri, devotees observe fasts, visit temples, and perform Abhishek of the Shivalinga with milk, honey, and water. MP CM Mohan Yadav performed the said rituals at the revered Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain.
The revered Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain is beautifully adorned with flowers, jewellery , and traditional attire on Mahashivratri. Devotees offer sweets, fruits, and sacred items as part of the grand celebration and rituals.
Special Bhasma Aarti was performed at wee hours, which witnessed participation of Shiv bhakts.
The other revered Jyotirlinga in the state, Omkareshwar was decked up with vibrant garlands of red roses and white flowers.
On the occasion of Mahashivratri, the divine idol adorned golden-hued attire, intricate jewelry, and multiple floral garlands, symbolizing devotion and festivity.
In the major cities like Indore and Bhopal, grand processions of Lord Shiva in his different forms is taken out on the roads. The procession is taken out resembling a Baraat during a wedding.
The Bhojpur Temple, which adornes one of the largest, but an unfinished Shivalinga is decorated with tons of white and red flowers. It is also visited by thousands of devotees on the Mahashivratri.
Mahashivratri is a day that marks the utter love and devotion of devotees towards their lord. Replicating the lord's wedding is a way of displaying the sheer devotion people have for their revered 'Bhagwan'
