On the occasion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti, Central Railway celebrated the enduring legacy of the visionary Maratha warrior, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, whose leadership, military genius, and contributions to the region’s cultural and historical heritage continue to inspire generations.
Dharam Veer Meena, General Manager, Central Railway paid rich tributes to the Great King on his birth anniversary. The CSMT heritage building echoed with shouts of “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ki Jay” as the General Manager garlanded the bust of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at the CSMT heritage building.
Speaking on the occasion, Meena said “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is one of the greatest national heroes of India. He laid the foundation of Hindavi Swaraj which was based on Justice, Morality and Tolerance. He was truly a Benevolent, Generous and Secular King. Renaming this heritage terminus as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, serves as a tribute to his relentless commitment to safeguarding his people, creating a just and progressive kingdom, and his indomitable spirit of leadership.”
A significant milestone in this ongoing tribute came in March 1996, when the iconic Victoria Terminus (VT) was officially renamed in honour of the legendary king as Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, later in 2017 the station was renamed as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). This change reflected the heartfelt sentiments of the people of Maharashtra and recognized the monumental role of Shivaji Maharaj in shaping the region’s identity.
Later, on 7th April 2004, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This architectural marvel built in 1887, remains one of Mumbai’s most recognizable landmarks. As a vital railway hub, it continues to serve millions of daily commuters and long-distance travellers. While the name has changed appropriately, the station's legacy as a central symbol of Mumbai's bustling railway network endures.
As we commemorate the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, let us reflect on his legacy and the impact of his leadership. His values of courage, resilience, and a deep sense of duty to people continues to guide us as we forge ahead into the future, honouring his contributions to our rich history.
Principal Head of Departments, Senior Officers and staff of Central Railway were also present during the occasion.
