She was born Kastur Kapadia on April 11, 1869. She was married to Mahatma Gandhi in 1883 when she was 14 years old. She was illiterate until Gandhi taught her to read and write. She was a prominent figure in the Indian Independence Movement. She survived two heart-attacks and scuumned to death.She was influenced by Gandhi and was very involved with his visions.She had four sons who survived to adulthood. She never fully recovered after the death of her first child. She was involved in politics in South Africa, where she established the Phoenix Settlement near Durban in 1904. She was independent of judgment and had disagreements with Gandhi. While in prison her chronic bronchitis worsened, and she contracted pneumonia and suffered a series of heart attacks before dying in early 1944.
