In a major boost to Maharashtra’s tourism and entertainment sector, the state government has unveiled plans for a world-class theme park in Navi Mumbai, modeled after Disneyland. Spread across 200 hectares, the upcoming attraction aims to redefine the region’s recreational landscape, drawing millions of visitors from across India and abroad.
According to the Economic Master Plan for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), prepared by the state government along with Niti Aayog, the theme park will serve as a centre piece for the state’s broader vision of transforming Mumbai into a global tourism hub. The ambitious project will include multiple entertainment zones, resorts, animation studios, water parks, and event venues, creating a vibrant ecosystem for both leisure and business activities.
The project, estimated to require an investment of USD 6-7 billion, will be largely driven by private-sector participation. The Maharashtra government has planned several policy incentives, including lease rent subsidies, extended lease tenures, and increased Floor Space Index (FSI) to attract investors. Additional measures such as tax reductions and capital subsidies for iconic tourism projects will further enhance the investment appeal.
The economic impact of the theme park is projected to be significant. Industry experts estimate that the venture will generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs across the hospitality, entertainment, and infrastructure sectors. By FY30, Mumbai’s tourism revenue is expected to quadruple, with the theme park serving as a major catalyst for this growth. Additionally, the influx of domestic and international tourists is likely to boost local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and retail outlets.
As per official documents, the initial master planning and land allocation by CIDCO are expected to be completed by 2025-26. The government will invite private investors and conduct the bidding process by 2026-27. Construction will take place in multiple phases, with key attractions expected to be operational by 2030.
Sources indicate that the theme park will include several high-adrenaline ride zones, interactive digital experiences, and state-of-the-art animation studios. The integration of Mumbai’s existing film and media industry into the park’s design is expected to create a unique entertainment experience, positioning it as a cultural landmark alongside Bollywood.
With Navi Mumbai’s strategic location, excellent connectivity via the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, and a growing demand for world-class leisure facilities, the theme park is set to place Maharashtra on the global tourism map. Experts believe it will rival established international amusement parks, attracting both families and adventure seekers.
Government officials remain optimistic about the long-term benefits of the project. “This theme park is a transformative step in making Mumbai a world-class destination. It will not only generate employment but also significantly enhance the city’s global appeal,” a senior MMRDA official stated.
As the project moves forward, stakeholders across industries eagerly await its progress. If executed as planned, the Navi Mumbai theme park could become a landmark attraction, setting a new benchmark for entertainment tourism in India.
