Aga Khan IV, the spiritual leader of millions of Ismaili Muslims worldwide, has passed away at the age of 88. The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) announced his death and stated that his designated successor will be revealed soon. His will is set to be read in Lisbon in the presence of his family and senior religious leaders before the successor’s name is made public. However, no official date has been announced for this declaration.
Who Will Be The Next Imam?
According to the Ismaili community’s traditions, the next Imam will be chosen from among his male progeny or other relatives. The late Aga Khan is survived by his four children: Princess Zahra, Prince Rahim, Prince Hussain and Prince Aly Muhammad. Speculation is rife that his eldest son, Prince Rahim, may take on the role of the 50th hereditary Imam. However, the official successor will only be confirmed once the Aga Khan’s will is read publicly.
The Aga Khan IV, born Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, was the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslim community and a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad. He peacefully passed away in Lisbon on February 4, 2025, surrounded by his family. The AKDN, which he founded and chaired, announced his passing on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting his lifelong commitment to humanitarian work.
The organization extended its condolences to his family and the global Ismaili community. In a statement, the network reaffirmed its dedication to carrying forward his vision. "As we honour the legacy of our founder, Prince Karim Aga Khan, we continue to work with our partners to improve the quality of life for individuals and communities across the world, as he wished, irrespective of their religious affiliations or origins."
Throughout his leadership, the Aga Khan played a crucial role in philanthropy, education and development, establishing numerous institutions under the AKDN. His work focused on improving healthcare, education and economic development in underprivileged communities across Africa, South Asia and the Middle East. His successor will inherit not just a religious role but also the leadership of an extensive global network dedicated to social progress.
