Tata Motors has strengthened its efforts to conserve water and support rural communities by signing and MoU with the Maharashtra government to restore 1,000 water bodies across 20 districts facing water scarcity. This initiative builds on the company’s previous efforts in 2024, where it successfully revived 356 water bodies under the state’s Gal Mukt Dharan Gal Yukt Shivar Yojana. Working alongside the Soil and Water Conservation Department, NAAM Foundation, and local communities, Tata Motors aims to enhance water availability through de-siltation and restoration, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development.
Tata Motors is expanding its water conservation efforts across Maharashtra, focusing on 20 districts, including the drought-prone regions of Vidarbha and Marathwada. The initiative aims to restore 1,000 water bodies in key areas such as Amravati, Latur, Chandrapur, Nagpur, Nanded, Parbhani, and several others. Partnering with the NAAM Foundation, the program will focus on rejuvenating water sources to improve availability in affected regions, reinforcing Tata Motors’ commitment to sustainable water management.
Speaking on the initiative, Priya Khan, Officer on Special Duty – Chief Minister’s Office, Government of Maharashtra, said, “The Government of Maharashtra launched the 'Gal Mukt Dharan, Gal Mukt Shivar Yojana’ to increase the water capacity of existing dams and water bodies. This programme has evolved into a people’s movement thanks to the invaluable support of our partner organisations like Tata Motors and NAAM Foundation. Together, we are not just restoring water bodies; we are fostering resilience and sustainability to reduce the impact of recurring droughts in the state.”
Ganesh Thorat, CEO – NAAM Foundation, said, “The NAAM Foundation began addressing Maharashtra's acute water shortage in 2015. Our partnership with Tata Motors and the Government of Maharashtra is a significant milestone towards these efforts. Last year, we collectively expanded our work to ten districts. We are happy to see that the positive impact of the water conservation efforts will now reach more districts.”
In 2024, Tata Motors and the NAAM Foundation successfully restored 356 water bodies across 10 districts in Maharashtra, including Pune, Palghar, Thane, and Latur. Through large-scale desilting, around 60 lakh cubic meters of silt were removed, increasing water storage capacity by nearly 7,000 million litres. This initiative has directly benefited 7,000 farmers by improving groundwater levels and enhancing access to drinking water in rural areas. Under the Gal Mukt Dharan Gal Yukt Shivar Yojana, farmers receive pre-approved funds to transport silt to their fields, enriching soil fertility. A digital monitoring system ensures transparency and efficiency in project execution, reinforcing Tata Motors’ commitment to sustainable rural development.
