In a major step towards improving passenger comfort, Mumbai’s local trains will soon be equipped with an oxygen enhancement system to address suffocation and breathing difficulties caused by excessive overcrowding. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced this initiative on Monday via video link, stating that work on designing new rakes with this advanced feature is already in progress.

Every day, approximately 75 to 80 lakh commuters travel on Mumbai’s suburban railway network, relying on the Central and Western railway lines. Due to the over crowd, thousands of passengers often travel in cramped conditions, sometimes even hanging from train doors. This congestion reduces oxygen levels, causing health issues and discomfort for commuters.

"The railway authorities are designing new local trains inspired by the Vande Bharat Express. These upgraded trains will feature an oxygen enhancement system, ensuring better air circulation and a more comfortable travel experience. The system, similar to the one installed in Vande Bharat trains, will help maintain optimal oxygen levels inside the coaches" said Vaishnaw.

"Along with this development, several railway stations in Mumbai are undergoing renovations to manage the growing passenger load. Efforts are also being made to increase the number of local train services. Currently, 3,032 local trains operate on the Central and Western railway lines, and this number is expected to rise by 10% in the near future" further added Vaishnaw.

Suresh Kamble (45), a frequent commuter on CR, praised the move and said, "This is a significant move to improve Mumbai's lifeline, ensuring safer and more comfortable journeys for millions of commuters."
