A woman from West Bengal's Howrah District allegedly made her husband sell his kidney for Rs 10 lakh in order to raise money for their daughter's education before stealing the money and eloping with her lover, reported Press Trust of India (PTI). The man's family, which lives in Sankrail has lodged a complaint with the police.
According to the complaint and as reported by PTI, the woman had been pressuring her husband for a year to sell his kidney in order to raise funds for their household and send their 12-year-old daughter to a good school.
The woman even sealed a contract with a kidney buyer for Rs 10 lakh.
The surgery was carried out in January.
PTI reported that as the man came home with the money following the surgery, the wife told him to rest and remain inside the house for speedy recovery.
"Then one day she left the house and did not return. I later found the entire amount of Rs 10 lakh in cash along with some more was missing from the almirah," the man said as quoted by PTI.
The man and his family, located the woman to a house in Barrackpore which is far away from Howrah. The search effort took involved help from the couple's friends and acquaintances.
It was eventually found that in Barrackpore, she was living with a man she was having an affair with for a year. They met on Facebook, says the complaint.
When the husband's family reached the house in Barrackpore, the wife refused to come out and her lover allegedly threatened them with a divorce suit with allegations of physical and metal torture.
The woman's lover claimed that she only took money which she had saved and nothing more.
Further police investigation is on.
