Kolkata: A 20-year-old second-year medical student from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was found hanging in her room at the ESI quarters in Kamarhati, Kolkata. The incident, first reported by The Times of India, has raised concerns over mental health issues among medical students.

The deceased lived with her mother, a doctor at the local ESI hospital, while her father, a senior official at a nationalised bank, is currently posted in Mumbai. According to reports citing police sources, the young student may have been struggling with depression.

Student Found Hanging In Her Room

The tragedy took place when the student’s mother repeatedly tried calling her but received no response. Worried, she rushed to her daughter’s room at the hospital quarters. After getting no reply from inside, she was forced to break open the door, only to find her daughter hanging.

Authorities were immediately alerted and the student was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. A senior police officer from the Barrackpore Commissionerate confirmed the sequence of events, adding that no suicide note was found at the scene.

Following the incident, the police have launched an unnatural death investigation. The student’s body has been sent for postmortem examination at the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital. Hospital officials described her as a generally quiet individual, according to the Times of India.

About RG Kar Rape-Murder Case

This tragic incident comes just days after the conviction of Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, in the rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The case had triggered nationwide outrage when the crime took place on August 9 last year.

On January 20, a Sealdah court sentenced Roy to life imprisonment till death after finding him guilty of the heinous crime. The investigation into the case was handed over to the CBI following a directive from the Calcutta High Court.

However, the victim’s parents have claimed that the investigation was incomplete, alleging that other individuals involved in the crime were shielded.
