Further, she said that the speech was so embarrassing that "we're not friends anymore." This led netizens to speculate that Witherspoon was referring to Kate Winslet, digging up a speech Witherspoon gave at the BAFTA/LA Cunard Britannia Awards in 2007.

Reacting to the fallout rumours with Kate, Reese slammed the news, calling it "silly." Sharing the article on her Instagram story, the actress wrote, "Hey guys .. just spoke to my very dear friend for years, Kate W. We laughed about this stupidity. Please do not believe the internet. We are good friends and have never had any falling out."
