A 60-year-old man from Pune's Warje, who was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), died due to respiratory failure at Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) in the early hours of Saturday, officials said.

According to a release issued by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the man was admitted to the state-run hospital on January 16 in a critical condition. He passed away at 12:30am on Saturday, the release added.

The man had hypertension and the reason for his death is stated as "respiratory failure with autonomic dysfunction with quadriplegia".

This is the fifth suspected death due to GBS.
