Indore (Madhya Pradesh): An ophthalmologist was duped of Rs 30 lakh by a man from Ghaziabad on the pretext of sending ophthalmologic equipment to him, police said on Friday.

The accused had contacted the doctor through WhatsApp and assured him to send all the required equipment so the complainant had borrowed a bank loan to buy the same. Palasia police station in charge Manish Mishra informed Free Press that a case has been registered against Rakesh Kaul, a resident of Ghaziabad on the complaint of Dr Mahesh Agrawal, a resident of Old Palasia area of the city under sections 406, 409, 420 of the IPC on Thursday.  

Agrawal had given a written complaint a few days ago stating that he was contacted by the accused through WhatsApp in 2023. The accused had introduced himself as a dealer of ophthalmologic equipment and had assured him to provide all required equipment at a cheap price. He had gained the trust of Dr Agrawal so he showed his interest in buying the equipment.  

As Agrawal and his wife had set up a clinic in the area so he had applied for a bank loan for buying the equipment. The bank had transferred Rs 30,07,500 to the bank account of the accused as the borrower had told the bank to transfer the amount to him.

After receiving the money, the accused started delaying the order. When he didn’t send the equipment and return the money, the complainant lodged a complaint with the police.

Mishra further said that the accused had used the address given by him only for a few months. A team has been constituted for the arrest of the accused.

Cloth merchant duped of Rs 1.45 lakh

A cloth merchant has lodged a complaint with Sarafa police station staff that he runs his shop at Subhash Chowk and he had sent clothes worth Rs 1.45 lakh to some traders of the city. They received the goods but didn’t transfer money to him. A case has been registered under various sections of the IPC against the accused named Hemant alias Honey, Prakash Shamani, Ritu Sethi and Satish Lakhotia and started a search for them.
