Mira Bhayandar: Six people including four hailing from Orissa and two from Gujarat were arrested by the crime detection unit attached to the Navghar police station after they were found to be in possession of ganja (cannabis) worth more than Rs 6.90 lakh on Thursday night.
Personnel from the crime detection unit spotted a group of six people carrying suitcases near the east side of the Bhayandar railway station at around 12:30 am. The personnel sensed something suspicious, checked their luggage bags and found 40 kilograms of ganja.
The sextet was arrested and an offence under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act-1985 was registered against them at the Navghar police station.
They were remanded to a week-long police custody after they were produced before the district sessions court, Thane on Friday. Investigations were on to ascertain the source of the contraband and potential buyers, police said.
