Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Bhopal’s longest flyover, Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Flyover, connecting Ganesh Mandir to Gayatri Mandir in MP nagar area, was recently inaugurated by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.
The bridge, part of a 6-km network of three flyovers (Subhash Nagar, Dr. Ambedkar, and Veer Savarkar), has reduced traffic congestion significantly. Around 60% of the traffic on the main MP Nagar road now passes over the flyover, offering much-needed relief.
However, after its opening, three major problems have been identified that are causing issues for commuters.
1. No Signal At The Third Leg
The flyover, which is 2.75 km long, has three legs: one at Ganesh Mandir, another at Gayatri Mandir in M P Nagar area, and a third at Shaurya Smarak Chauraha (near Bhopal Haat). At the intersection of these three legs, there is no traffic signal. This creates a risk of accidents as vehicles turn at high speeds. While there is a small rotary in the middle, it is not sufficient for smooth traffic flow.
2. Extra Distance Due To Dividers
One end of the flyover descends near Ganesh Mandir, leading to Veer Savarkar Bridge. Previously, there were no dividers on this stretch, allowing vehicles to take a right turn towards areas like Arera Colony, 10 Number Market, Bitthan Market, Kolar Road, and Shahpura. Now, a divider has been built, forcing vehicles to take a 2-km detour via Veer Savarkar Bridge.
Adding a traffic signal near the temple could solve this issue, as some drivers were seen taking the wrong side on the first day.
3. Turning Issues At Shaurya Smarak
At the third leg of the flyover near Shaurya Smarak, vehicles face challenges while turning or descending. The lack of a proper rotary in this area is creating problems, and experts suggest building one to ease traffic flow.
The cost of the flyover has raised questions. Two boards near the inauguration site at the Gayatri Mandir arm show different figures: ₹126 crore and ₹140 crore.
Meanwhile, PWD officials have stated the total cost, including GST, is around ₹154 crore. This cost discrepancy has sparked discussions among locals.
Despite the challenges, the flyover has already eased traffic. The distance from Gayatri Mandir to Ganesh Mandir, which previously took 14 minutes by road, can now be covered in just 5 minutes on the flyover.
Traffic signals at key intersections like Mansarovar Tiraha, Pragati Chauraha, and Board Office Chauraha have also seen reduced waiting times.
