A 73-year-old woman pedestrian was killed after being hit by an unknown vehicle in Thane on Thursday. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene after the accident. The police said that they launched a manhunt for the driver.
The deceased has been identified as Pupshshri Shreepad Agashe, 73, a resident of Roshani Complex located in Teen Hath Naka, Thane.
The incident took place at Teen Hath Naka at 6:30 AM on Thursday when the deceased went to buy milk.
She was met with an accident while returning from the milk shop. An unknown vehicle was recklessly headed to Thane from Mumbai and hit her from behind. Following this, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene.
Locals and passersby rushed to the spot. They promptly alerted the local police about it. She was taken to Civil Hospital in Thane, where the doctor referred her to Sion Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.
Naupada police lodged an FIR against an unknown driver under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the relevant section of the Motor Vehicle Act.
According to the police, the Agashe forgot her mobile phone when she left home to buy milk. She did not return home for a long time. The family members started to look for her.
She was alive with injuries and she had given a mobile number of her family members to passerby and locals, but it was unknown. Later, she was taken to Civil Hospital where one of the women recognized her and informed her family members immediately.
Abhay Mahajan, a senior police inspector from the Nauoada Police Station, said, "We have registered an FIR against an unknown driver. We are reviewing the CCTV footage installed in the nearby locality. We will trace him soon after receiving the registration number of the vehicle. Further investigation is underway."
