While Punekars rallied on social media for the opening of the new terminal at Pune airport, which also saw much political uproar due to delays, it has now come to light that the old terminal at Pune airport will be demolished.
It should be noted that the new terminal building was inaugurated last year, and now almost all the airlines are operating from the new terminal building.
Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol and Minister of State (MoS) for Civil Aviation and Cooperation made the announcement on Tuesday in Pune that the old terminal at the Pune airport will be demolished. He informed that all operations that are yet to be shifted to the new terminal will now be moved, and the old terminal building will be demolished and redeveloped into a new one.
What will the redeveloped terminal have?
According to the AAI Pune administration, the development plan for the old terminal building includes transforming the current arrival hall into an expanded departure hall. This new space will be connected to the new integrated terminal building (NITB) through a dedicated corridor. The expansion is aimed at accommodating increasing passenger traffic and improving operational efficiency. The upgraded area will feature 16 additional check-in counters, designed to streamline passenger flow and reduce waiting times. Additionally, a modernized security check area will be introduced, equipped with advanced Door Frame Metal Detectors (DFMDs) and X-ray machines, ensuring enhanced security and faster screening procedures.
As per the authorities, the project will integrate the existing airport systems with those of the NITB, ensuring a seamless transition and operational cohesion.
