If you use Zomato to order only vegetarian dishes regularly, the app might have charged you an additional fee. Wait, what? Are you revisiting your cart and checking the bill right now? We suggest you do so to figure out whether Zomato has levied a "Veg mode enablement fee" on your order. This came to light when a user pointed it out on social media and condemned the food delivery app.

A Zomato user named Rohit Ranjan reported the incident on LinkedIn pointing out that his order comprising veg dishes attracted an extra fee.

It was believed that Rohit turned on the 'only veg' mode on the app to eliminate non-veg dishes he wasn't looking for and easily search through the available vegetarian options. However, he learned on the billing page that he was charged extra for this behaviour.

Upset with Zomato, the user shared a long post on social media. "Zomato’s latest masterstroke—introducing an "extra charge" for the veg enablement fleet—has officially turned us into a premium subscription plan", he wrote. "Thanks, Zomato, for proving once again that being veg is now a luxury tax", he added slamming the food delivery platform for the additional charge added to his order.

Addressing the incident he witnessed while using the app to order food online, he wrote, "Being a vegetarian in India these days feels like curse".

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal responds

As the LinkedIn post went viral and received thousands of reactions, it caught the attention of Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal. He immediately apologized to the customer who was charged with a 'Veg mode enablement fee' of Rs. 2.

"This is absolutely stupid on our part. I am super sorry for this. This charge will be removed today itself. Will also fix what's needed to fix in the team so that such s**t doesn't happen again. Thank you for pointing this out," Goyal wrote. The Zomato CEO's reply was acknowledged by Rohit Ranjan.
