TMC MP Mahua Moitra on Sunday launched a scathing attack on former Supreme Court Judge Justice Arun Mishra over his latest appointment as Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Ombudsman & Ethics Officer.
Taking to X, Mahua wrote, 'Justice Arun Mishra appointed BCCI Ombudsman & Ethics Officer after illustrious stint at NHRC. An internationally acclaimed brown-noser who shames us both globally and locally.'
Mahua's attack against Justice Mishra comes days after BCCI appointed him as Ombudsman and Ethics Officer.
Justice Arun Mishra was elevated as Supreme Court judge on July 7, 2014, and retired on September 2, 2020, before being appointed as the chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on June 2, 2021, a position he held until June 1, 2024.
His six-year stint in the apex court was marked by controversies. According to a Hindustan Times report, in 2016, Justice Mishra engaged in a verbal exchange in open court with his brother judge Justice MY Eqbal.
He made headlines a few months before his retirement as Supreme Court judge when he praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a 'versatile genius.'
In February 2020, speaking at an international judicial conference, Justice Mishra said, 'The Prime Minister is a versatile genius who thinks globally and acts locally. India is a responsible member of the international community under the stewardship of internationally acclaimed visionary Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi.'
Later, he faced criticism for his remarks from the Supreme Court Bar Association, which condemned the statement, saying it 'reflected poorly on the independence of the top court and the judiciary.'
