Mumbai: Answering a video call from an unknown number proved costly for a 58-year-old man. The unsuspecting victim answered a video call in which a woman was seen involved in obscene acts. The scammers recorded the said call and used it to extort money from the victim.
According to the police, the victim works as a security executive in a private company at Beed. Recently, when the victim was at work he received a WhatsApp video call from an unknown number. On answering the call the victim saw a young woman approximately 35-year-old. The call lasted around two to three minutes and the woman was involved in obscene acts.
Then the scammer had recorded the said video call and after a while the victim received a call from an unknown person who told him that he had recorded the obscene video call in which the victim could be seen. The caller told the victim that if the victim did not pay him Rs 5 lakh, then he would make the video viral on social media stating that the victim watches such video in the office.
Thereafter, the victim kept receiving calls from different numbers asking for money. Out of fear, the victim sent Rs 3.25 lakh in ten transactions in different bank accounts provided by the scammer. However, when the demand for money kept continuing, the victim approached the cyber crime police and got an offence registered in the matter.
A case has been registered by the police under sections 318 (cheating), 319 (cheating by personation) 351 (criminal intimidation) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and sections 66 (computer related offences), 66D (cheating by personation by using computer resource) of the Information Technology Act.
